snort -T not terminating on old (6.2) FreeBSD system

my standard script first runs snort with -T to test configuration and  
if all is OK then it reruns the command with -D instead of -T.  On  
this box the session with -T never exits.

Any idea what is going on?  The box is scheduled for an OS upgrade in  
a couple of months but I really need to get this going now.
