Depending on the OS you are using the setup guides are here:

You shouldn't have a problem if you follow them. If possible have 2 network
cards (one for sniffing the network and one for management) if using in IDS
mode. Also use emergingthreats.net rules as they will help detect malware
infections as well as other things too.
