Triggering some rules

Dear experts
Based on my understanding of Snort rules, I tried enabling certain set
of rules and have been trying to get Snort throw up some alert, but
all in vain. Could anyone help me out how can i test out certain
rules?
For example- the web-misc /etc/passwd (sid 1122) rule, or the web-misc
intranet access rule (sid 1214) ? I would be happy with a generic
answer than an answer specific to these examples i quoted.
