Server Hardware Recommendations

Server Hardware Recommendations:   Does anyone have a starting point document or general recommendations to buy/setup a 
server to run Snort?   I understand that there are many variables involved but there must be a jumping off point where 
a Retail  IT department can start with this base configuration and move up or down depending on all the factors 
involved.  Thanks
