Snort Unable To Write Unified2 Files

I have my snort installation up and running OK, it's able to send alerts
that are captured to a log file, but nothing is output in the unified2
format.

I have the line in snort.conf as follows -

output unified2: filename merged.log, limit 128

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
