snort 2.9.5.5 from source - error on make

All,
snort from debian repo is old, 2.9.2.2 so i'm bound to install it from source.
i keep getting the below error after i execute the following:
./configure --enable-sourcefire && make && checkinstall
....ake[4]: *** [libsf_dynamic_output_la-output_lib.lo] Error 1make[4]: Leaving directory 
`/usr/src/snort-2.9.5.5/src/dynamic-output/libs'make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1make[3]: Leaving directory 
`/usr/src/snort-2.9.5.5/src/dynamic-output'make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1make[2]: Leaving directory 
`/usr/src/snort-2.9.5.5/src'make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1make[1]: Leaving directory 
`/usr/src/snort-2.9.5.5'make: *** [all] Error 2
any advice on how to troubleshoot ?
