Hi tcpdump-workers team,

Just following up on my message from a week ago—did you have a chance to receive and review it? Happy to provide more details if helpful.

Best Regards,

Hi tcpdump‑workers,

I would like to request a new link‑layer header type for PCAP/PCAP‑NG capture files, based on the DECT‑2020 New Radio (NR) link type.

The proposed values are:

  * LINKTYPE name: *LINKTYPE_DECT_NR_TAP*
  * DLT name: *DLT_DECT_NR_TAP*
  * Value: *304*

This type is intended for DECT‑2020 NR frames (MAC and DLC‑layer frames as defined by ETSI TS 103‑636‑4 and TS 103‑636‑5) that are captured with a custom metadata TAP‑style header prepended. The inner payload is otherwise identical to DLT_DECT_NR as used in existing DLT_DECT_NR captures.

The specification for LINKTYPE_DECT_NR_TAP can be found in the attached file _linktype_dect_nr_tap.md_ and is publicly available at https://github.com/DSRCorporation/dect-nr-tap

This type is analogous to LINKTYPE_IEEE802_11_RADIOTAP and LINKTYPE_IEEE802_15_4_TAP: it adds a metadata header without changing the underlying MAC‑layer format.

Goals:

  * Reuse DLT_DECT_NR parsing for the inner payload.
  * Allow tools such as tcpdump, Wireshark, etc., to expose metadata
    (e.g., RSSI, SNR, channel, transaction ID) from the TLV header.

References:

  * ETSI TS 103‑636‑4 – DECT‑2020 New Radio (NR); part 4 – MAC‑layer.
  * ETSI TS 103‑636‑5 – DECT‑2020 New Radio (NR); part 5 – DLC and
    convergence layers.
  * IETF draft-ietf-opsawg-pcaplinktype – Link‑Layer Types for PCAP
    and PCAP‑NG.

I intend to submit an IANA registration for this type and would like to use the same name and value (*304*) in libpcap/tcpdump once the registry entry is approved.

Thank you for your time.
