RE: New workplace security measures. Are they usual?

'Rights' may only be a part of this question. Legally, in many countries,
you are not allowed to open mail addressed to someone else. Ethically, I'd
say the letterhead signifies some ownership of the content of the letter as
it is a representation from the company. There may be instances where this
reading of other peoples' mail is 'allowable' under law, but I doubt it.
IANAL and IANACP*, so take as you will.
A 'packet' is not like a letter in many ways and so a new set of boundaries
are required for them and are evolving even now.

I don't know of any test cases where an employee has successfully contested
the point; that their privacy has been breached whilst using company
resources. Anyone heard of one yet?

If we take some of this to a strangely logical conclusion, does my memory of
some company IP belong to the company? Even after I have left the company?
Maybe we need an NDA that covers my thoughts, too.

How about I ask a different qeuestion - If you type a letter on company
letterhead and then send it through the post, does the company have a right
to know what is in that letter?

Now, does the same apply if you send an email from the company email server?
