Police said at least 36 people have reported that their numbers have been used fraudulently in Georgia, Florida and other states. The loss is several thousand dollars. Police are advising people to regularly review their accounts online, if possible, and to report fraudulent activity immediately. Valparaiso Detective Lt. John Ross said the victims did not lose possession of their cards, but their card numbers were obtained. He said it is unknown how criminals have obtained people's card numbers, but because the cards originate from several different banks, it doesn't appear initially that a single bank has had a security breach. Ross said police and bank officials are trying to determine if the dozens of victims used a common retailer that might be the source of the criminal activity. The crime seems to have originated in Valparaiso, where police have taken at least 30 fraud reports in the past month. Porter County police said they have taken about six fraud reports in about a week. Anyone who becomes the victim of debit/credit card fraud is advised to contact the card issuer and police. The investigation continues. <http://www.action3news.com/Global/story.asp?S=13274825>
