Douglas insurance agent charged with fraud and identity theft

A Douglas man has been charged with insurance fraud and identity theft
in the submitting applications for insurance on Dodge County employees
without their knowledge, Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens
said.

Fraud investigators with his office and the Dodge County Sheriff’s
Office arrested David Marcus Jones, Jr., 50, of Douglas on six counts
of felony insurance fraud and seven counts of identity theft, Hudgens
said.

Applications for insurance coverage for six workers in the Dodge
County Tax Appraiser’s Office were submitted to American Life
Insurance Co. without first notifying the employees, Hudgens said.

“Our investigation has determined that policies for disability,
critical illness and life insurance were issued and employee salaries
were deducted without their permission,” Hudgens said.

Jones is accused of using his position as an employee benefits
specialist to obtain the workers’ personal information and submit the
applications in order to collect commissions on the policies, Hudgens
said.

At the time the applications were submitted, Jones worked for Taylor
Insurance Services in Valdosta, which provides insurance services for
Dodge County’s benefits plan, Hudgens said.

If convicted, Jones could be sentenced to two to 10 years in prison
and fined up to $10,000, Hudgens said.
