No faux pas in my view, they don't have to ask and this is effectively a public forum, doing so is a courtesy. Even on private forums and internal communications everything that I write in my work capacity is subject to open records requests. Almost anything I write on a day-to-day basis could end up in the news.
Personally I prefer having government communications in whatever capacity be open, we just need to remember that what we post here (and elsewhere) is for all intents and purposes posted publicly and for posterity and ensure that what we post is appropriate.

I'll cop to that one. On the Oxford story the author emailed me and asked if he could use my comments on this list in his story. I may have committed a faux pas, but I gave permission as I stood behind my comments and still do.At least he asked. :) Drew Perry Security Analyst Murray State University (270) 809-4414 aperry () murraystate edu <mailto:aperry () murraystate edu>***MSU Information Systems staff will*_never_*ask for your password or other confidential information via email.**** *On Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at 3:01 PM, H Morrow Long <morrow.long () yale edu <mailto:morrow.long () yale edu>> wrote:Yes, there are members of the press that read this mailing list (as well as other Educause lists). For example, the Chronicle of Higher Education wrote an article last night on the temporary (2.5 hour shutdown) by Oxford University of Google Forms (Docs) and they may have gotten their 'lead' on that story from this mailing list. I don't mind, I don't feel that my words warranted attribution.
