 Commerce Assistant Secretary Rohde to host demonstration of
Internet-based warning system

 WASHINGTON-- Gregory L. Rohde, assistant secretary of commerce for
communications and information and administrator of the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), will host a
news conference on Nov. 1, 2000 to demonstrate a new Internet-based
system to warn the public about storms or other weather-related events.

The demonstration will be sponsored by the ISP Business Forum, and is a
follow up to the July 17, 2000 All-Hazards Warning roundtable. Jamison
Hawkins, Chief, Programs and Plans Division, National Weather Service
Office of Science and Technology also will participate in the news
conference.

     WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

     WHERE: Room 1605 of the Commerce Department building, 14th St. and
Pa. Ave., N.W.

SPECIAL LOGISTICS: Because of the room being used for the demonstration,
please note: (1) Reporters must come to the entrance at 14th St. and
Pennsylvania Ave. You must bring press credentials for admittance. (2)
All pagers, cell phones or other transmitting devices must be turned off
when entering the news conference.
