I was using "RAID controller" as a broad term meaning either hardware or a software based storage arrangement solution.

we do not use raid controllers.  they hide the hardware, as you note.
linux raid (md) and zfs (usually raidz2) kinda folk here.  and then smartmontools, short test daily, long test weekly.
