terribly hard to write a proxy that puts a WHOIS front end on RDAP
servers.

Or even simpler:

$ brew install rdap
$ echo alias whois rdap >> ~/.bashrc
$ . ~/.bashrc

As a benefit of this, you'll even get parsable yaml (or json / xml if you
want
that instead), instead of the unstructured mess you get with whois.
