Actually, I think RIRs could actually run proxy themselfs, and
generate WHOIS reply based on RDAP data. Why not?

Or even simpler:

$ brew install rdap
$ echo alias whois rdap >> ~/.bashrc
$ . ~/.bashrc

As a benefit of this, you'll even get parsable yaml (or json / xml if you want
that instead), instead of the unstructured mess you get with whois.
