Actually, I think RIRs could actually run proxy themselfs, and
generate WHOIS reply based on RDAP data. Why not?

It occurs to me that if people REALLY REALLY want WHOIS, it would not be terribly hard to write a proxy that puts a WHOIS front end on RDAP servers.
Or even simpler: $ brew install rdap $ echo alias whois rdap >> ~/.bashrc $ . ~/.bashrc As a benefit of this, you'll even get parsable yaml (or json / xml if you want that instead), instead of the unstructured mess you get with whois.
