I just did a "whois" on my own domains and found it still working. And
I checked under the hood - the client isn't using RDAP.

It depends on the registry. Verisign and PIR which run com, net, and org, still have whois, Identity Digital which runs .info and a lot of other smaller domains doesn't.

Maybe there's a disconnect between announcement and practice here? And
the lack of outcry is because pragmatically speaking whois still
works?

No, it's because people who do domain WHOIS have seen the news from ICANN and done the small amount of work to move to RDAP.

Re Randy's comment, a lot of info is redacted but again it depends on the registrar. Everyone still provides registration and expiration dates and a link to the registrar, some registrars provide a lot more. Look for example at GURUS.COM which I sold about 30 years ago and has been baouncing around among speculators ever since.
