Here's what I don't understand: Gmail's spam filtering from everything I
can tell is really good. Is the implication that they don't run their
spam filters on posts to Google Groups? Wouldn't that hurt Google
Groups' reputation for other spam filters? It seems like such an easy
problem for them to solve.

I disagree. Gmail spam filtering has been pretty bad for me. A lot of
mailing list traffic (various IETF lists and even NANOG) and responses from
businesses that I communicate with end up in my spam folder. And a lot of
real spam and phishing messages end up in my inbox. If I could, I would
disable it and do my spam filtering manually. It would be less work than
undoing the mess that the current filter creates.
